How to Communicate Better with Your Husband

husbandFrom Elizabeth’s Heart—

According to online sources, communication appears consistently on the top-ten lists of reasons couples divorce. I’m sure you have had issues with your husband’s choice of words or means of communication. And I’m just as sure there have been times when he has struggled with your methods of communication.

The first way to improve communication is easy: You must pray. Your act of praying will change your heart—and speech, and it will involve God in your husband’s speech.

The second way to improve communication in your marriage is much harder: You must deal with yourself. Evaluate how much you may be contributing to the downward communications and speech spiral between you and your husband. Try to put your finger on what you may be doing that affects your husband negatively.

The next time you go head-to-head verbally, before you lash out at your husband like a cat with her claws out, and before you jump in to vent at your husband about his speech, and before you lecture him, and before you spout out Bible verses, just stop. Then immediately start praying. “Lord, what is the right thing to do here? What is the right thing to say? The right way to act? Lord, help me. I need Your wisdom.”

This kind of response puts the brakes on an escalating argument. It gives you time to come up with a better plan and much better words for communicating with your husband. Clear, gracious words and a calm demeanor will make it easier for your husband to listen to you.

In 15 Verses to Pray for Your Husband, Elizabeth shares how praying the Scriptures is especially powerful and will…

  • bring deeper unity to your marriage relationship
  • sharpen your awareness of God’s work in your husband’s life
  • give your husband a confident assurance you’re on his side

How did men and women in the Bible accomplish great things for God? There wasn’t any secret formula or bestselling book on success for them. In fact, they were ordinary people like you and me. What made them effective was their willingness to obey God—one decision at a time.

Power in Prayer
Power in Prayer

by Elizabeth George April 02, 2024

There are few things that can change a marriage the way prayer can. While I was an associate pastor, a couple came to my office for marriage counseling. After we pinpointed several areas of concern in their marriage that needed their attention, I asked the husband to commit the couple’s desires to the Lord. As the man finished praying, I looked up to discover that his wife was crying. She explained through her tears that this was the first time in ten years of marriage that they had prayed together as a couple!
